WILD RICE


This is not a rice but a zizania aquatica which belongs to the graminease family It is an aquatic plant that grows in swamps and at the edges of ponds whose caryopsis, which can be as long as 1 cm, were collected and used as food by the Chippewa Indians of Minnesota, thus giving rise to the name kin rice. This species grows in the Eastern United States, in the Congo North-East Asia.
